Luke 2:7 (KJV)
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no #room for them in the inn.
When it was time for mary to deliver the Messiah whom she had conceived supernaturally by the announcement of an angel in a divine encounter and by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit,
She fell into labour while embarking on a journey.
Luke 2:1-2 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.
The birth of Jesus took place at a period of Time in history where there were lots of socio-economic pressure on the part of the Jews; a decree had gone out from Rome the world ruling powers of the day demanding everyone should be taxed.
The birth of the Messiah was at a time no jew expected any good news. The Romans were ruling them with an iron hand and making the Jews work like never before.
The weather was high, the political pressure was high, it was at this time that a decree went out that everybody must go to their hometown to be counted or else the consequences would be unbearable.
It was in the midst of this political and economic pressure while everyone was travelling to their hometown obeying orders from Rome compulsorily to be counted in the census that Mary fell into labour.
When her labour came, the husband rushed her to an inn ( a modern-day hotel or guest house .)
The inns were used by travellers of old as their lodging place but when they approached the reception desk, They couldn’t find a place in the inn.
It was either travellers who also came for census had occupied all the rooms in the inn or this carpenter from Galilee and his wife in labour looked so poor to the manager of that in that he couldn’t see them being able to afford the price of a room.
It was apparent that Mary was in labour but they couldn’t offer them a room in the inn for the delivery so Joseph had to alternate with a manger nearby.
The manager of the inn missed an incredible opportunity to put his hotel on the footprint of history! What could have been credited to their inn Went to the manger ! Today, we should have been reading and talking about the inn and not the manger .
If only the manager knew what Mary was carrying on the inside; if he knew that the baby inside this poor girl from Galilee was the Messiah all ages had been waiting for, he could have cleared the inn and make room for them. If he knew the word who became flesh was about to be born under his roof, he could have refunded some money back to some occupants and clear enough rooms for this mother of all deliveries!
To them, mary looked like another pregnant woman. The air around this couple was so simple that they don’t look like carrying anything special; Mary was not the only pregnant woman on the road. The manager of the inn was familiar with seeing pregnant people deliver in their inn so it wasn’t new to them.
If only the manager of that inn knew that the lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the whole world was about to be born in his inn inside, he could have cleared many rooms for mary to deliver her child.
If he knew the one who will deliver us from the power of Satan was inside what he perceived as an ordinary girl travelling from Galilee, he could have made room for the delivery inside the inn.
All of history was about to be changed, all prophecies that had been read in the synagogues every sabbath day for ages was coming to fulfilment in the birth of this baby inside his inn ;The owner of the inn must have listened to rabbis and many temple priests talk about the Messiah in the synagogues but yet, when the opportunity to have this messiah delivered under his roof came , he missed it!
Angels and shepherds who went to the manager to honour the child could have paraded his inn instead but he missed it.
Since Mary in labour couldn’t find a room in that inn, God created a manger as an alternative.
I wished the owner of that inn was like the Shunammite woman in the bible who had spiritual discernment concerning who Elisha was and what he was carrying that she made room for him in her house :
2 Kings 4:8-10 (KJV)
8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. 9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
The question is, Why was Jesus born in BETHLEHEM?
Bethlehem means the house of bread.
Bethlehem was the place where the wheat and barley were found and which were used to bake the shewbread in the temple.
Jesus was born the bread of life and he has to come in the house of bread (Bethlehem )
He was born in the stable why because all the lamb for sacrifice must be born in the stable!
BETHLEHEM was the place where the lambs were born; the ones that were used for the morning offering and the evening sacrifice in the temple.
He was born in the place that both represents Bread and lamb.
He was born in a Manger.
A manager is not a baby cradle as we imagined, It is a little hollow hewn from a rock.
Mary took the lamb, wrapped it up with a swaddling cloth and laid it in a rock.
Luke 2:7 (KJV)
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
That was very prophetic because
One day, they will take him up from the cross and wrap him in linen and laid him in rock. Wow, I feel like raising a shout here.
Matthew 27:59-60 (KJV)
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
