THE WIDOW, THE CREDITORS AND THE LITTLE JAR OF OIL.

2 Kings 4:1-2 (KJV)
1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. 2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Each time I read through this story, I see so many similarities between this story and the present day mega churches. The woman in the eye of the storm represent the church; just like her husband died, we also have an husband that died, He died 2000 years ago. Unlike the husband of this woman that died, our own husband rose from the dead and not only that, He paid all our debts in full.hallelujah!

When the husband of this widow died, he left a pot of oil behind: the oil represent the Holy Spirit throughout the bible. Jesus also died and left the church with the Holy Spirit:

John 16:7 (KJV)
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

The two kids of this widow represent the next generation in the house while the creditors represent the worldly system and it resources. When the creditors came in this scenario, they came for the two kids; they came for the next generation. What gave the creditors the audacity to stretch their hands toward the children of the widow woman?

Because it was their resources the late prophet ( their father )used to raise them. He had always borrowed resources from the creditors (worldly system) to feed and raised his kids; so they had a stake here.
This is where we are going;

Today’s church is under the attack of the creditors  (The worldly system, it’s loans and resources)
In the last few years, churches began to dream of becoming mega. And in quest for that, we became daring not minding where we sourced resources from: We have adopted worldly principles, ideas, resources and fashion in other to achieve our dream of becoming mega; we bring unregenerated but successful worldly men to speak alongside our apostles in our church seminars; worldly comedians anchors our meetings for a fee; churches took billions from the banks of the world as loans without any measuring collateral just to join the class of those generation of churches known as the mega ones. Unknown to us, we are romancing with a wicked ruthless creditor (the worldly system) and we are building with their resources, not knowing its long term implication on the next generation in the house. Because we have adopted their style, fashion, conduct, methods and idea to build, our churches are becoming increasingly worldly in setting and outlook. Obviously, the creditors we borrowed ideas, principles, style, fashion and even money from have returned for a claim in what we have built .

The generation of youth in the church are so worldly, the spirit of the world is trying to bring them into bondage after their redemption because we have leveraged on worldly resources and patterns to raise them.

When the creditors came in, the embattled widow ran to Elisha the prophet of God who asked her a question:

2 Kings 4:2 (KJV)
2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

There was nothing in the house except a pot of oil. Friends, the pot of oil is still very much in the house. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is still much in the house. The prophet directed her to borrow vessels from her neiighbours and shut the door behind her with the borrowed empty vessels and the pot of oil and at the end of the day,the pot of oil heroics saved the next generation (the two sons of the widow) from going into bondage.

When the creditors came in to bind the two sons of the widow, the pot of oil became the standard God raised to save the day :

Isaiah 59:19 (KJV)
19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.

The pot of oil brought Liberty from indebtedness and slavery:

2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Let us go back to the pot of oil in the house which Christ the husband of the church left behind! Let us go back to the ministry of the Holy Spirit; let us go back to the culture we once had in waiting upon his directives and being led solely by him alone and let our mega churches return back to spirit filled doctrines and activities.

The way out of our indebtedness and current dilemma is in going back to the Holy Spirit and submitting totally to his leadership.

Let us continue another time.

Shalom.
