Three things a true relationship will exchange with you are:
A robe, A sword, and A girdle
Samuel 18:3-4 )
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the #robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his #sword, and to his bow, and to his #girdle.
Jonathan made a covenant with David .
Please note that friendship is not a casual thing , it is a covenant thing .Jonathan was the reigning king’s son( Saul ) and David was a shepherd boy .He ( Jonathan) was the heir apparent. It was the case of a pauper and the prince and in cutting a covenant relationship with David ,Jonathan exchanged three things with him :
He gave him his garment ,his sword and his girdle . let us take a look at each of these implements and see what they actually represent in the context of a relationship . You are in the right and a safe relationship if these transactions had taken place .
First of all ,Jonathan stripped himself of his robes and became naked but clothed david a desert Rockie with it . It wasn’t just an ordinary garment ,it was a princely garment. the exchange of garment depicts love.
Furthermore, that exchange stands for covering.
(Isaiah 58:7 )
Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry,
and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
By that act, Jonathan entered into a covenant with David. ” In this friendship, your nakedness is covered even if I have to go naked, yours is covered.
Has anyone stripped themselves of their garment yet and gave it to you? Is the relationship truly providing covering for you or making you vulnerable?
Do you have friends who can cover your nakedness and not chat or tweet about your deepest burden or pain behind you?
Do you really enjoy true confidentiality in the one you called your confidants?
When Jonathan gave David his garment, he was demonstrating love. ……This is how much I love you ‘but He didn’t stop there, he further gave him his weapon.
A sword is an instrument for launching the offensive. It is for piercing, wounding and slaying. The sword is for battle. It is every soldier’s pride ;what makes a soldier a soldier is being in possession of a sword and When Jonathan took off all his weapons and gave it to David in a land that at that time, only Saul and his son had swords,
he saying… This is how much I trust you, David.
Symbolically, if you give someone all your weapon you are saying I trust you.
if you give someone your bow and arrow and you still have the armour on, that won’t be a demonstration of trust; I give you the weapon but I keep the protective armour on, that won’t be a demonstration of trust but if you give you all, sword, bow, arrows, the armour etc, then I am saying… I fully trust you.
I give you both my protection and my weapon, now, I make myself defenceless against you and I give you the means to attack me because I trust you.
It is like a mobile policeman in our own context handling over his 4K 47 assault rifle, a bulletproof vest and all the live ammo in his possession to you. He becomes defenceless !
Furthermore, When Jonathan gave David his sword, he was saying to him :
“In this friendship Take my weapon, I no longer have any means to hurt you ” I don’t have any means to pierce you or stab you either at the back on in front of you. I am harmless in this relationship ! you can go to sleep with your eyes close In this relationship and you won’t be wounded or inflicted with pain.
Has anyone surrendered their swords to you? Do you have friends in your life that both of you have submitted your weapons and armour or any of those things that could cause injury to one another in love ?
Cain and Abel were brothers but it came to pass that one day while they talked at the field, Cain slew Abel:
Genesis 4:8 (KJV)
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
look at the time in which Cain slew his brother Abel ……While he was talked with him!
the bible didn’t say while they were having an argument over something, it didn’t say while they were quarrelling over anything, it was while they were talking. A talk or a conversation is a harmless thing, it shouldn’t lead to death yet that was the moment Cain choose to strike.
Cain had a relationship with his brother Abel but he had not submitted his sword to him !
It isn’t safe relating when both have not submitted their weapon!
thirdly, Jonathan gave him his girdle.
What does the Girdle represent?
It speaks of loyalty. It speaks of truthfulness and integrity.
when Jonathan gave david his girdle, he was saying by that act, I will remain loyal to you” I won’t betray you, I won’t sell you out” I will walk with you with integrity and singleness of the heart.
Have you ever wondered why a prince would leave his palace and look for a paper in the desert and cut this kind of covenant with him?
Why? Because he saw tomorrow! He knew David by all means would be king .by right Jonathan was in line for kingship because he was the Reigning king’s son and the legitimate heir to the throne but he saw David’s tomorrow .he knew by divine providence that David would be king!
If you can see my tomorrow I know you will treat me better today ! the reason you have not treated me well is that you are only looking at where I stand presently. you can’t see what my tomorrow offers!
Enough of shortsighted relationship !!
